Important : the automatic ticket offices only accept cash. The ticket offices in front of the Colosseum only accept cards.

It is best to visit St. Peter’s Basilica in the afternoon, when the lines are the shortest – we were at the Basilica around 4-5 p.m. and managed to get in in about 15 minutes. If you are planning to visit the catacombs, head there first – they close before the rest of the complex closes.

It is definitely worth packing a skirt or a scarf in your suitcase – especially if you intend to visit Roman churches and basilicas. In these most popular places, you can meet volunteers who make sure that tourists visiting the temples look decent, and who will not let you in if you are not dressed appropriately. If you do not feel like walking around in a skirt all day, be sure to get a skirt with an elastic band or a scarf that you can quickly put on before entering the church.
